Architecture Quest – 4th week
As usual, I’m finishing the week with lots of interesting new insights and updates!
Town Meeting – This week we had a very busy meeting. My own children had a week off, and they really wanted to visit Acton. Alden and I agreed that one child visiting each time would make sense, and Ori asked to be the first one. At the Town Meeting, I told the Eagles in the studio that Ori wanted to come, and I explained them that since the studio is theirs and not the guides’, they needed to approve the visit. We voted and the visit was unanimously approved. Everyone (including me!) was very excited. Then we moved on to discuss the suggestion of one of the Eagles to add a Lego building challenge to next week’s exhibition. The main dilemma was what they would build with Lego, and in the end, it was decided that Wednesday’s free time would be spent on building with Lego for those who wanted it. The last topic that the Eagles discussed was a request to sit on chairs during circle instead of on the floor. We voted and the suggestion was passed by a majority vote (but failed during the first circle it was applied. The chairs were a serious distraction and the Eagles asked to return to the floor).
Architecture quest – The Eagles progressed a lot with their model building this week. Each team already has at least one floor of a standing three-dimensional model completed. The final exhibition will take place next week, and I promise to upload photos of the final products.
Planning the playground – During the last two weeks of the architecture quest the Eagles were presented with another challenge: design their own playground. On the playground they currently have equipment that’s suitable for younger kids and the idea was that as part of the architecture quest they would plan a design that would then be implemented with a $500 budget. The Eagles are very excited about the idea! At the beginning of the week, we brainstormed about all kinds of ideas that could be relevant, and then they were given a task to write a detailed proposal with their idea of a playground, specific products they found on the internet that could fit, and cost and time estimates including installation. Every Eagle made her own proposal and at the beginning of next week they will decide which options they like the most. They have already come with the ideas of a zip line, a maze a huge swing as well as other super cool ideas. You can probably imagine how excited I am about this whole idea! Just think how empowering it is for the Eagles to plan and execute a project that actually transforms their environment.
Ori’s visit – So as you understood in the first section, Ori spent an entire day in the studio. He really enjoyed the experience: first of all, he was very happy to be able to visit my workplace for once (the rest of the time I work with Israel so he doesn’t really get to spend time there…), and he also got along great with the Eagles and enjoyed all the activities. It was such a joyous experience for me and especially it was so fun to be with him for a whole day in a place that until now was completely away from my family.
Next week, the session ends!
