Daily life at Acton

Coding and Robotics – Week 7 (Last week of the session!)

The Coding and Robotics session has come to an end. As usual at the end of a session, the Eagles prepared a concluding exhibition to their families. The Eagles did all the planning of the exhibition by themselves over the past week: They analyzed the previous exhibition, they understood what was more successful (almost everything) and what was less successful (keeping up with time and the transitions between the stations), they decided (again) to have one of the Eagles be responsible for the time, and this time they also prepared program leaflets, which were distributed to the participants at the entrance.

I came to the exhibition with three of my four children, because Yair is abroad. In addition, another Acton founder came to the exhibition with her son, so this time, the exhibition was for a larger audience than usual (usually, only the Eagles’ parents arrive). The exhibition began with a baking competition: Three Eagles baked cookies at home and competed for the best looking and tastiest cookie. Then the Eagles presented their artwork (the Art from Nature) and the new procedures that were added to the studio during the last session (a recycling box and a flow chart of what should be done in the event of a disagreement between the Eagles). The Eagles then presented their progress in the core skills to their parents along with the code they have written with Code.org. The best part was a lovely maze Eagles prepared on the floor, demonstrating how the robot they built passes through the maze with great success. The final part was a reading of the essays they wrote (in order to convince an imaginary philanthropist to donate money to the national park of their choosing). After the essays were read, we announced one of the girls as winner of the best essay contest and she received a lovely book that Alden bought.

We’re off for a one week break, see you in two weeks!
